To Be, or Not To Be (Giving a Fuck)

A few months ago I was reading Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck. It’s a good book. Not great, but I definitely get the hype and it was an enjoyable read, but that’s neither here nor there. This isn’t a review.

My favorite part of the book is in the first chapter when “not giving a fuck” is defined. Manson writes about subtlety between being indifferent, and being comfortable with being different.

“Let’s be clear. There’s absolutely nothing admirable or confident about indifference. People who are indifferent are lame and scared. They’re couch potatoes and Internet trolls. In fact, indifferent people often attempt to be indifferent because in reality they give way too many fucks. They give a fuck about what everyone thinks of their hair, so they never bother washing or combing it. They give a fuck about what everyone thinks of their ideas, so they hide behind sarcasm and self-righteous snark.”

This brings me to my point: Why does it seem like everyone on the internet doesn’t care about anyone else’s opinion yet argues tirelessly when someone disagrees with them.

I understand it probably has to do with it being much easier to argue in short, thought-out Facebook posts rather than face to face, but there’s so much false nonchalance it gets to be overwhelming.

I love social networking, but I hate social media. Or at least dislike what social media is, but not so much what it seems like it was originally intended for; an outlet for individuals to share creative content.

I see the all-too-often post with something along the lines of, “Here’s this thing I made. Check it out. Or don’t.”— Such insecurity.

If I make a video, write a blog, create anything at all, and post it online, I want people to see it and hopefully enjoy it at least a little. Otherwise, why the fuck would I put it out there?

I know it’s a defense people use. They don’t have to feel stupid if their video on YouTube doesn’t get any views or their song on Soundcloud doesn’t get any listens (Listens? Likes? Shares? I’m not really sure what you get on Soundcloud) if they directly told people it doesn’t matter if they check it out.

So know this, whatever stupid image I draw or Photoshop, whatever video I produce, whatever stupid words I force together in an attempt to make a somewhat interesting post, know that that I absolutely give a fuck.

Because here’s the sneaky truth about life. There’s no such thing as not giving a fuck.
